My interest in Nature and animals started young as I was brought up on a farm with livestock and ponies all around me. My first memory is of being licked by the sandpapery tongue of a cow. I went to an agricultural college in Hampshire, worked in Australia as a jillaroo on cattle and sheep properties, joined Farmers Weekly magazine as a livestock reporter and then decided, before I had my first child, to find a job that I could fit around children. So, I started to write. And animals seemed the natural choice, especially after I came across the beautiful Animal series from Reaktion Books. I sent in a proposal to write about the cow and the rest, as they say, is history.
With three books under my belt, I have now emerged from the dusty recesses of the library and, blinking, have started to reconnect with Nature. Physically. Emotionally. Creatively. Spiritually.
I feel totally different having rediscovered the pure joy of being in Nature (reliving my childhood) and this has helped me through the last year while trying to reach my missing brother, Christian Velten.
