Christian would love this...
So, I started this blog as a way to 'forget' that I'm waiting for my missing brother, Christian Velten, to get in touch. Chris is a zoologist/adventurer so I thought that by re-connecting with the Nature we knew as children, growing up together on a farm, it would somehow bring us closer and also provide me with an escape route in my mind. Immersion in Nature has proved to be both healing and inspirational. And spiritual.
Something has happened, though, which I wasn't expecting. I have a real passion brewing in me to spread this message about the beneficial power of Nature. But it has to be a mutual relationship - she scratches my back, I'll scratch hers. And the most natural way for me to achieve this is through written communication, as I've been writing/authoring/ghostwriting for over 20 years (17 of those years writing about animals).
How to communicate what I believe? I know everyone loves a catchphrase and most people know about the Carbon and Water cycle, from GCSE Biology, so what about another type of cycle/spiral: a mutualism cycle (I know it hasn't got that accessible ring to it, but I'll work on it!).
The circle starts with YOU (or me - I'll use myself as the example). I CONNECT with Nature - this was through growing up on a farm / my Dad's love of birds. I EXPLORE in Nature - go with the flow, meander, dip in & out of Nature in life and career. I FLOURISH in Nature - when I realise what Nature gives me (healing & inspiration). I DISPERSE Nature's gifts - I spread the word and hope my gift from Nature will help someone else CONNECT with Nature.... and so the cycle continues.
I say it is mutualistic because Nature helps me, I help her - I believe people will only really connect to climate change, the need for biodiversity, changing their lifestyles, etc. when they connect with Nature on a personal and emotional level. Intimacy with Nature will change our relationship from a mainly parasitic one to one of mutualism.
As the weeks go by, I'll define this more clearly and I hope to start sharing stories of how others have connected, explored, flourished and dispersed Nature's gifts - hopefully this will inspire you to join the cycle. Must find a name for it - anyone have a suggestion?
Please put yourself forward if you have a story to share/would like to partner somehow... leave a comment, DM via Twitter or email me.
